Montaldo di Mondovì

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 571 · Postal code: 12080

Montaldo's territory begins where the Roburentello joins the Corsaglia; the main village, Piazza, sits at about 800 metres. The name surfaces in 1041, in a diploma of Henry III the Black granting the bishop of Asti the hermitage of Sant'Ambrogio “called Monsaltus”: the hermitage is on record before the village, and still stands at Camerano, from the end of the tenth century.

The rest of the comune lies scattered in hamlets, most with a church of their own: at Roà Marenca two Roman gravestones are set into the wall of San Rocco. Iron was mined near Oberti until the Second World War; chestnuts and Raschera d'alpeggio come from these slopes.
