Vicoforte

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,167 · Postal code: 12080

Until the nineteenth century the town was simply Vico, from the Latin vicus, an inhabited place. The present name dates from 1863, and that "forte" recalls a fortification that had stood here until 1684, almost two centuries earlier.

In the early thirteenth century a good many Vico families moved onto a nearby height, the Monte di Vico, and there began the Villa Nova that would become Montis Regalis, that is Mondovì. Soon after, Vico was reduced to the rank of villario and placed under the administration of that same town: it stayed there through the Middle Ages and beyond, until an edict of Vittorio Amedeo II in 1698.
