Magliano Alpi

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,231 · Postal code: 12060

The comune is made of two pieces that do not touch, some fifty kilometres apart: to the north the village proper, at the gates of Mondovì; to the south, up against the Ligurian Alps, an almost uninhabited territory. It is what is left of the grazing rights the people of Magliano won up there over the centuries, and the village kept jurisdiction over that ground.

Up there too lies Lake Raschera, which gives its name to the cheese. The village name is argued over: from the Latin family name Mallius, or, more plainly, from a forge hammer that served the area. It was Magliano di Mondovì, and took its present name after a Turin appeal court ruling of 1875 assigned it those alps for good.
