Sant'Albano Stura

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,380 · Postal code: 12040

In the spring of 2009, during digging for the Asti-Cuneo motorway near the hamlet of Ceriolo, a Lombard cemetery came to light: some eight hundred graves over more than three thousand square metres, cut straight into the soil, without a wall. It stayed open just long enough to be studied, then it was covered again and the works went on.

For three centuries the bishops of Asti held both spiritual and temporal lordship here. When a coalition of towns — Alessandria, Mondovì, Cuneo, Busca, Savigliano — turned against them, the counts of Savoy brokered the truce, which confirmed the bishops in exactly the powers they had before. The coat of arms shows the Roman soldier Albano on horseback, martyred in the fourth century.
