Lequio Tanaro

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 819 · Postal code: 12060

The name of Lequio may come from the Greek leukos, white, or the Latin locus, place; but the likeliest guess seems to be lucus, wood, given the old landscape. The first known inhabitants were the Ligurian Bagienni, whose centre was nearby Bene Vagienna, and Roman gravestones and tombs have turned up here.

The village broke away from Bene Vagienna in 1692 as Lequio Piemonte, later renamed Lequio Tanaro to avoid confusion with Lequio Berria; in the twentieth century it was put back in, and came out again in 1947. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo has a bare brick front, a clock in the gable and a painted medallion above the door.
