Andezeno

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,966 · Postal code: 10020

The name may come from Andicus: three separate holdings, Andi, Andeco and Andicello, that welded into one place. Others trace it to the Andes, the Celtic tribe Caesar wrote about, and read their name in Andio, the hill north of the village.

In December 1290 Chieri bought the place along with its inhabitants for two thousand Asti lire. In 1543 French troops took it and the Spanish destroyed it; the villagers, held to be traitors, were driven out and only in 1545 were pardoned and allowed to rebuild. Little of the castle survives, absorbed into later houses, and the bell tower began as its defence tower.
