San Michele Mondovì

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,034 · Postal code: 12080

The name comes from the Lombards, who settled in these valleys and were much devoted to Saint Michael the Archangel. The oldest document that speaks of the borgo is of 1113: it records a donation made to the church by some noble families of the county of Bredolo.

Those who wanted a freer life left: many broke away from the bishop of Asti and took refuge on the Monte di Vico, where they founded the community of Monteregale, with a government of its own. On 19 April 1796, meanwhile, the banks of the Corsaglia and the village itself saw fighting between Austro-Piedmontese and Napoleonic troops; Giosuè Carducci gave the Bicocca di San Giacomo an ode, in his Rime e ritmi.
