The village sits at the mouth of the Valle Mongia, just east of the stream of that name. Two readings circulate: Lux Ignis, and Laeso Ligno, cut wood, since the place grew where woods stood and were felled to make room. The comune chose the first: its arms carry a lit torch and the motto LUX IGNIS.
In 1013 Olderico Manfredi, marquis of Susa, sold the castle to a priest; it passed to the bishop of Asti and the marquises of Ceva. Of three castles two survive, the Castellazzo and that of the Del Carretto marquises; the third the Savoys pulled down, and the town hall sits on it, over the cellars, beside a tower.
