Niella Tanaro

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,035 · Postal code: 12060

The castle of Niella Tanaro was probably put up in the twelfth century, under the protection of the marquisate of Ceva. It changed hands oddly: on 30 October 1807 count Coardi di Carpeneto sold it, outbuildings and all, to his sharecropper Andrea Piovano. The earliest known image of the building is an 1852 print by Francesco Gonin.

Late Gothic Piedmontese frescoes of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries survive on the fronts of several houses in the village. The parish church is dedicated to the Assumption; the sanctuary of Nostra Signora dates from the early twentieth century.
