Mombasiglio

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 616 · Postal code: 12070

Mombasiglio stands between Mondovì and Ceva, guarding the Mongia valley. In 1222 it passed to the marquises of Ceva in exchange for Boves, swapped with the Ardizone brothers, and became one of the donzeni the marquisate was divided into; in 1331 Almerico and Giovanni of Ceva had the parchment codex of the village statutes drawn up, where the parish church of San Nicola already appears.

The castle, raised around the year one thousand, closes the hilltop beside the church tower. In 1796 General Sérurier's division came down from Battifollo and Scagnello, occupied it and took hay, food, wine and timber for the troops; today it holds a museum devoted to Napoleon.
