Igliano

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 84 · Postal code: 12060

Igliano stands on the hills of the Langa Cebana, left of the Cusina stream running down to the Tanaro, its houses split between the main village, San Luigi and the hamlet of Langa. Its arms come from long use, not a decree: a silver field and an uprooted lime tree. A Roman funerary stone found in 1935 is set into the wall of the parish church of Sant'Andrea; chiefly for that stone the village is cautiously traced back to Roman times.

In 1295 the marquises of Ceva handed Igliano to the commune of Asti, and later it passed to the house of Savoy. Outside the village stands the sixteenth-century chapel of San Sebastiano, bare stone, with a fresco of the Virgin and Child between Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian over its altar. Farming still rules: cereals, fodder, cattle and sheep. The land lies within the recognised area of the upper Belbo valley potato, also called the Mombarcaro potato.
