Feast of the Madonna della Neve
📅 Every year, on 5 August
On 5 August Castellino Tanaro, a municipality of 337 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patroness the Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snows).
The name of Castellino Tanaro comes from late Latin and recalls the hilltop stronghold that once commanded the village. One Gothic tower of sandstone blocks survives, thirty-five metres high, the last piece of a marquisal castle pulled down by Napoleonic troops between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Giosuè Carducci called it the slender tower in La Bicocca di San Giacomo. The municipal arms, borrowed from the marquisate seated here, show a silver curtain wall with three open Ghibelline towers and a gold star in chief.
In 1799 a handful of men led by Captain Francolino of Castellino and the surgeon Cerrina of Murazzano forced the surrender of Maris, the French commander of the fortress of Ceva; four days earlier, so the story goes, eight men of the village's first company had raised their standard on its ramparts. In the Second World War the hills around saw round-ups and fighting between partisans and Nazi-Fascist units, and the citation for the bronze medal for military valour awarded to the comune speaks of a rebel town and people.
