Caraglio

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,755 · Postal code: 12023

Caraglio stands at the mouth of the Valle Grana, on the banks of the stream of the same name. The name first appears in a document of 984, when the marquis Manfredo gave Caraglio and Cervere to the brothers Alineo II and Anselmo degli Alinei; the castle on the hill is recorded from 1128, and until 1244 the town was subject to the marquises of Saluzzo.

In 1198 the people of Caraglio, ground down by their lord, revolted: the castle caught fire, the nobles were driven out or killed, and the inhabitants fled to the plateau of the abbot of Pedona, who took them in. They were about two hundred men with their families, and where they stopped stands Cuneo today. Later came silk, with four mills, and the garlic of Caraglio.
