Cressa

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,571 · Postal code: 28012

The name seems to go back to a Roman called Crescinio or Crescente, named on a stone found at Santa Cristina di Borgomanero. In Roman times the place was Crisiae, a deed of 1236 writes Cresia, and today's spelling appears only in 1330, when the monastery of Arona granted lands to a Giovanni known as il Ceredano.

In the fields south of the village stands the Romanesque oratory of San Giulio, first recorded in 1025 as a dependency of the parish church of Suno. A stone slab with three carved crosses lies before the wooden door; inside, frescoes probably of the fifteenth century show San Giulio with plague victims and with snakes.
