Cavour

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,568 · Postal code: 10061

Cavour lies at the foot of a rock that rises only a hundred and sixty-two metres above the plain, and is seen from far off for that very reason: there is nothing else around. Geologists call it an inselberg, an isolated relief surrounded by more recent sedimentary deposits, and it is protected as a special nature reserve.

The name comes from Forum Vibii Caburrum: the Romans built the castrum Forum Vibii over a Ligurian settlement already called Caburrum, and the toponym would derive from the Caburriates, the small local Ligurian tribe. Of the Rocca, Giovanni Peyron held that in prehistory it had a sacred character, for that rare pairing of an isolated hill and a spring.
