Cavaglietto

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 407 · Postal code: 28010

The oldest core is not today's village but Cavaglio Mediano, now shrunk to the farmstead called Cascina Monastero: nobles under Lombard law gave its church and castle to Cluny, and a nunnery grew there, on record from 1092. A century later that monastery was buying up most of Cavaglietto, which the documents call Villa nova Cavalii Inferioris.

On the main square a stone column with an iron cross was raised as a votive offering when the plague probably reached the village too; behind it the parish church of San Vittore, gable front and onion dome above the pediment. Always an independent municipality, Cavaglietto was folded into Cavaglio d'Agogna only between 1928 and 1951.
