Armeno

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,201 · Postal code: 28011

Armignus appears in a document of 1061, but the place had been lived in far longer: at Lavignino a tomb of the fourth century before Christ was found. In Roman times the Settimia road passed through, opened under Septimius Severus, and Armeno was an obligatory stage on the way to Switzerland.

What left the village, though, were cooks and waiters. For generations Armeno was a nursery of hotel staff, and its men waited at the tables of internationally prominent people; over the years the flow has thinned. Meanwhile Sovazza and Coiromonte emptied out, two hamlets that had been comuni of their own and were absorbed in 1928.
