Ghemme

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,617 · Postal code: 28074

The name comes from the Agamini, a Celtic group settled here; the Romans made it Pagus Agamino and then Agamium, which is also read in Pliny, and from there the form wore down to Agheme, Gheme, Ghemme. In 356 the place appears in a letter of Saint Eusebius addressed to the "Agamini ad Palatium".

In 1467, at the castello ricetto, the duke of Milan Galeazzo Maria Sforza was received, come for the peace of Ghemme, which ended hostilities between the duchies of Milan and Savoy: the border between the two states was the Sesia. Alessandro Antonelli was born here in 1798.
