Gattinara

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 8,272 · Postal code: 13045

Gattinara is a planned town: the comune of Vercelli founded it in 1242 as a borgo franco, that is free of feudal burdens, with twelve rectangular blocks, and forcibly moved into it the inhabitants of the villages around, Castellazzo, Loceno, Locenello, Mezzano and Rado, which from then on disappeared.

The fortifications came first: between 1185 and 1187 the men of Vercelli had raised a castle around the hill church of San Lorenzo, guarding the mouths of the Valsesia. Of that system the Torre delle Castelle survives, today the symbol of the town. The name Gattinara, though, travels mostly on labels: the DOCG red produced on these hills.
