Grignasco

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,691 · Postal code: 28075

Grignasco appears for the first time on 7 May 999, in a diploma of the emperor Otto III, among the lands restored to the bishop of Vercelli. In 1132 a bull of Innocent II gives it as the seat of a pieve, plebem Grinassi, and a document of 1151 carries the name of one of the first clerics serving there: Marinus diaconus de Grignasco.

Below the hill of the castle of San Genesio, of which a few ruins remain, stood the cellars of Grignasco: a sort of small ricetto, easier to defend, around which the town later built itself. Its old shape can still be read walking via Castello and via Torrione.
