Lozzolo

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 819 · Postal code: 13045

Lozzolo was once Loceno, at the foot of the pre-Alps among vines; from the early twentieth century, besides wine, there were kaolin and feldspar quarries. The painter Vittorio Avondo came from here: he bought the castle of Issogne, had it restored and gave it to the State, and in 1866 he and artist friends painted a room in the village castle, the Room of Friends.

Just outside the village is the sanctuary of the Madonna Annunziata, raised in the mid seventeenth century as the oratory of the Blessed Virgin of Incesa, and used as a plague house. Its white front has three arches below and a painted Annunciation over the porch.
