Prato Sesia

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,993 · Postal code: 28077

The village was simply Prato: the specifier Sesia was added in 1863 to tell it apart from namesakes. Further back lies the ancient Karon, “above the waters”: tradition tells of a great lake between the hill of Sopramonte and that of San Lorenzo, where the houses stand today.

In the Middle Ages it depended on Romagnano Sesia and had one hamlet, Sopramonte; only towards the mid-sixteenth century, after long disputes, could it become a comune of its own. On the hill stands the watchtower of the Sopramonte castle, some twenty metres high, long used as a rainwater cistern.
