Feast of Saint Gaudentius
📅 Every year, on 22 January
On 22 January Cavallirio celebrates its patron Saint Gaudentius, after whom the parish church is named; the territory holds the Torre di Cavallirio and La Cammilluccia.
However you turn the etymology of Cavallirio, you end up with horses: the best-argued reading leads to Caballarium, a horse park, backed by the name of the hamlet Stoccada, which echoes the Lombard Stotgard with the same meaning; others circulate, such as horse stream. Old charters make the name Cabaler, Cavallerio, Cavalero; the village had broken away from Romagnano in 1536, and a decree of 1733 calls it Cavallirio Novarese.
That decree also forbade any household to keep more than three sheep. Outside the village, where the vineyards were, the vineyard huts remain: square buildings on two floors, put up from the nineteenth century on, with brick quoins and a wrought-iron crescent on the roof.
