Albiano d'Ivrea

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,791 · Postal code: 10010

The name has two explanations and neither is certain: the Gaulish alb, meaning high ground, or the Latin albus, white. The village belonged to the bishop-counts of Ivrea and was fought over by Vercelli and Ivrea; in the fourteenth century the ricetti went up to defend it, part-fortified houses that served as storehouse and refuge, and traces of them can still be read.

The parish church of San Martino is the work of Francesco Martinez of Messina, Juvarra's great-nephew, built between 1775 and 1780. The bell tower is medieval, older than the church: of seven bells only five remain, eighteenth-century ones, because Napoleon's army took two away to cast cannon.
