Caravino

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 995 · Postal code: 10010

The name Caravino may come from cavrinum, goatish, for the flocks these hills once carried; two other origins have been proposed. The place appears in the eleventh century as a fief of the Masino-Valperga counts, and in the summer of 1397 the Valperga could no longer hold back Facino Cane, who sacked the place.

In 1929 Caravino vanished from the map: it merged with its upper hamlet, Masino, and with Cossano Canavese into one comune called Masino. The divorce came in 1949, and Masino has been a hamlet of Caravino ever since. The village lies below the castle and long shared its fortunes.
