Feast of Saint Maurice
📅 Every year, on 22 September
On 22 September Borgofranco d'Ivrea celebrates Saint Maurice; the town's main church bears the same title.
The balmetti are natural cavities in the mountain that people have turned over the centuries into cellars and larders: inside, the temperature stays constant, thanks to an air flow produced by natural geothermal effects. The name comes from balma, a shelter under rock, a cave. The Canavese variant of the Via Francigena runs along the via dei Balmetti.
The Roman via delle Gallie also passed here, the consular road Augustus had built to link the Po plain with Gaul. The Dora Baltea cuts the town in two: on the far bank lies Bajo Dora, a comune of its own until 1929, when it was merged into Borgofranco. The parish church of San Maurizio, rebuilt in the eighteenth century, was consecrated in 1762.
