Montalto Dora

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,450 · Postal code: 10016

The castle stands on Monte Crovero and goes back to the middle of the twelfth century: it watched the lake plain of Ivrea and the road into the Aosta valley. Destroyed and rebuilt many times, it took the face it has now in 1890, with the restoration designed by Alfredo d'Andrade.

Where lake Coniglio once lay, now gone, a peat bog is left, and that ground is called the Terre ballerine, the dancing lands. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries ore came into the town by cableway from the mines of Brosso and Traversella, to be sorted here and loaded onto the railway. There was a lime quarry too, and both closed by the middle of the twentieth century.
