Bruino

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 8,479 · Postal code: 10090

Bruino lies on the right bank of the Sangone, at the mouth of the valley, some twenty kilometres from Turin. The first document naming it is from 1011, a donation by bishop Landolfo to the monastery of San Solutore; in 1252 an imperial diploma mentions the fief with a village and an already ruined castle.

The castle you see today is a different one, from the late sixteenth century, and it is still called the castello dei Malines, after the Flemish family that held the fief until the end of the eighteenth century. The Malines also left a modern idea: in 1758 count Roberto issued the bandi campestri, written rules with precise penalties in place of the lord's arbitrary judgement.
