Sangano

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,807 · Postal code: 10090

The origin of the name is obscure. Casalis reports that in the documents of marquis Adalbert I of Ivrea, of 929, one and the same place appears under three different names: Sango, Sangone and Sanganum. In 1004 Gezone, bishop of Turin, gave the lands of Sangano to the abbey of San Solutore.

In 1254 the abbots handed Sangano over to Bonifacio, lord of Piossasco, because they were in debt to him; thirty years later they got it back. The territory then passed to the castellany of Rivalta, held in fief by the Orsini. A thirteenth-century tower remains, and the church of Santi Solutore, Avventore e Ottavio, put up at the start of the eighteenth century.
