Saint Nazarius, patron of the land of the Torrazzo
📅 Every year, on 28 July
Villarbasse celebrates Saint Nazarius on 28 July, in the church dedicated to him.
The name comes from late Latin villar, used for villages not raised to municipal rank, and from abbatiarum, "of the abbeys": that of San Michele, the Sacra, and that of San Solutore Maggiore in Turin. On the hills around lie the cup-marked stones, carved in prehistory: erratic boulders left there by the glacier of the Susa valley.
In 1250 Villarbasse set itself up as a comune, with interests and rights distinct from the abbey of San Solutore. Being off the main roads, it saw little of war. On 20 November 1945, at the Simonetto farmstead, came the killings that carry the town's name: from that trial followed the last application of the death penalty in Italy.
