Brusasco

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,726 · Postal code: 10020

The name is disputed: some derive it from brusa, a bush, others from brusà, burnt; the phoenix on the arms argues for the second. The village lies on the Po where the Dora Baltea comes in, and between floods and raids on the fortress of Verrua Savoia the plain was unsafe, so people moved up to the Luogo, from Latin lucus, sacred wood. In 891 the first core of the castle went up there, where the church of San Bernardo still stands.

In 1927 Brusasco, Cavagnolo, Marcorengo and Brozolo became one comune and the arms took four stars. Brozolo broke away in 1948, Cavagnolo nine years later, Marcorengo stayed a hamlet: two stars remain.
