The name may come from Rustà, "climb", the Celtic outpost said to have stood here before the Romans, above a rise; traces of that period are few and partly lost. For centuries Rosta appears only as a place you pass through: the Romans went by on their way to Gaul, and the historic route of the Via Francigena runs here. The name is written down in a document of 1236, which already calls it old.
How many people lived here nobody knew until the Status Animarum of the seventeenth century counted about forty, in only two family groups, all of them peasants. Rosta became an independent comune in 1694.
