Caluso stands in the Canavese, on the outer southern slope of the moraine that closes the amphitheatre of Ivrea. The Romans made it a fortified citadel, an Oppidum Clausum, that is a closed town, which is probably where the name comes from: it served to control the road to Eporedia, today's Ivrea.
That position and the local climate suit the vine: Erbaluce di Caluso and Caluso Passito are made here, and the town is home to the regional wine cellar of the province of Turin. The grape festival has been held since 1933, in the third week of September, with the five quarters and four hamlets competing for the palio.
