Barone Canavese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 599 · Postal code: 10010

Barone appears in documents at the end of the twelfth century, a fief of the Valperga, the richest house in the Canavese: in the second half of the thirteenth century one of them became bishop-count of Ivrea, and the town's arms carry the hemp plant of their blazon. In the fourteenth century mercenaries paid by the Visconti destroyed the castle.

Between 1772 and 1774 Costanzo Michela, fresh from Juvarra's works at Stupinigi, designed a new one for the Valperga: two opposed wings joined by a hall thirteen metres high. It seems the money ran out. Near the church lies the pera d'l beucc, the holed boulder, probably prehistoric, where the old men used to meet.
