Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel
📅 Every year, on 29 September
On 29 September Candia Canavese celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel; the village also preserves the remains of Castelfiorito and the Torre di Castiglione.
Candia rests its terracotta roofs on the slopes of Monte Santo Stefano, the last swell of the Ivrea morainic amphitheatre. Below the village lies the lake, a glacial basin fed by underground springs; the park protecting it was the first provincial park set up in Italy and holds more than two hundred bird species.
On the hilltop, at 416 metres, the priory church of Santo Stefano del Monte sheltered pilgrims bound for Rome. In its crypt dog-bite wounds were treated with a red-hot key, a cauterising method already used here before the Roman conquest. In 1177 a bull of Alexander III handed the church to the canons of the Monte Giove hospice.
