Mazzè

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,152 · Postal code: 10035

Two ideas about the name. The first starts from an imperial-age tombstone found in the floor of the old parish church, dedicated to a sevir named Macionis. The second goes further back, to the Celtic Mattiacu: the philologist Giandomenico Serra derives it from Mattiaca, goddess of war and the underworld and lady of the fords, the one the Irish called Mórrígan. And at Mazzè lay the only usable ford on the Dora Baltea towards the Vercelli plain.

The castle stands on the San Michele hill, sheer above the bend of the Dora. In 1988 a menhir turned up in the comune, dating to about 1600 BC.
