Cantalupa

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,527 · Postal code: 10060

The village grew around the monastery of Santa Maria sopra Frossasco, and its hamlets still carry the surnames of the families who lived in them. Of the old church only the twelfth-century Romanesque bell tower survives, now a national monument: the parish church was rebuilt around it in the eighteenth century.

Cantalupa and Roletto wanted out of Frossasco, which gave in and signed the deed of separation in Turin in 1629; the quarrels went on all the same. The split was completed in the following century, but in 1928 Cantalupa was abolished and swallowed by Frossasco itself, and had to wait until 1954 to be a comune again.
