Frossasco

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,840 · Postal code: 10060

The town has a square plan, with streets crossing at right angles as in a Roman camp. The Acaia fortified it with walls, towers and ditches: the circuit had twenty-eight towers, and stretches of the fourteenth-century walls remain. Frossasco is the only town in Piedmont that still has all four of its gates, though two were destroyed and later rebuilt.

One of them, the San Donato gate on the road to Cantalupa, was blown up on the night of 19 July 1965: someone had placed a charge of TNT at its base. It was rebuilt in the following years, and in 1971 a plaque was put up recording the episode.

Frossasco celebrates Saint Donatus at the start of August, with the Sagra degli Abbà: an age-old tradition featuring a festivities committee led by a head of household for each of the town's four districts, elected for two years to preside over games, tournaments and dances during the popular celebrations.
