Cumiana

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 7,825 · Postal code: 10040

Cumiana has a documented birth date: 810, when one Teuctario, a Lombard lord left without heirs, gave the territory to the abbey of Novalesa. The deed calls the place Quomoviana, and a tenth-century copy is still in the abbey archives; in 2010 the town celebrated its twelve hundred years.

The territory climbs from the Pinerolo plain up to monte Sperino, at 1452 metres, and is made of some sixty hamlets and outlying villages; through the hamlet of Verna runs the 45th parallel, marked by two signs along the road. The year 1944 left the heaviest mark: the massacre carried out by the Germans cost the lives of fifty-one people from Cumiana.
