Carema

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 772 · Postal code: 10010

Carema stands in the northern Canavese, on the Dora Baltea at the border with the Aosta Valley, in a morainic basin. The mountain has been cut into terraces for the nebbiolo that gives the Carema wine, and the pergolas rest on lime-washed columns of stone and brick, the pilun. Above the stone roofs rises the sixty-metre bell tower of San Martino.

The Roman via delle Gallie, Augustus's consular road, ran through here, and the name is said to come from ad quadragesimum lapidem, forty miles from Aosta; another from Caremam, a customs post. Aosta was also where the 2007 vote looked: more than three quarters of the voters asked to join the Aosta Valley, but the borders did not move.
