Tavagnasco

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 813 · Postal code: 10010

Tavagnasco was born in the Middle Ages inside the Castellata of Settimo Vittone, always a rebellious place at odds with the nobles of the nearby castles over its autonomy. A Console and the Credenzieri ran it, sworn in by their outgoing predecessors; the Podestà, judge in civil and criminal cases, was appointed by the lords of Settimo Vittone, Montestrutto, Quincinetto and Ivrea.

In 1512 Giovanni Giacomo Enrico di Settimo tried by force to keep those appointments to himself; the villagers held out and, backed by the Savoys, won. The chapel of Santa Maria Maddalena, on a sloping meadow, has walls of rough render, a stone-slab porch and a bell turret on the ridge.
