Donnas

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 2,624 · Postal code: 11020

Just outside the old village the via delle Gallie is still there: a stretch of Roman road cut into the rock above the Dora Baltea, with a stone arch four metres thick and the milestone marking the thirty-sixth mile from Aosta. It is one of the best preserved Roman remains in the valley, and you walk on it.

The village stands where it does out of necessity: in 1176 a huge landslide destroyed the town and its first church, and it was rebuilt tight against the rock wall. Its 2,624 residents enjoy a climate mild enough to have earned Donnas the nickname of the Nice of the Aosta Valley; on the shaded side, high above, the hexagonal eleventh-century tower of Pramotton keeps watch.

Saint Peter in Chains and the chestnut festival

📅 Every year, on 1 August

On 1 August Donnas celebrates Saint Peter in Chains; at the start of October, instead, the grape and chestnut festival celebrates the local variety that may give the town its name.
