Carignano

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 9,156 · Postal code: 10041

Carignano lies some twenty kilometres south of Turin, on the left bank of the Po, and is one of the Piedmontese towns most tied to the river. The stretch between the two bridges was already crossed in the Neolithic: from the Garetìn, an islet downstream of the Carmagnola bridge, come the finds of a ford used when green stone axes travelled from Brittany to Hungary.

The monument that counts is the cathedral of Saints John the Baptist and Remigius, designed by Benedetto Alfieri, the court architect, and consecrated in 1764: a single fan-shaped nave, late baroque and theatrical. In the late nineteenth century this was a one company town grown around the Bona wool mill, and the mill's failure carried the economy away with it.
