La Loggia

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 8,631 · Postal code: 10040

The name almost certainly comes from a loggia: the one on the turret of the Castello Galli, which ended up standing for the whole castle and the lands under its jurisdiction. La Loggia first appears on 16 February 1396, in the contract by which Giacomo Darmelli bought the place.

It is one of the youngest municipalities in Piedmont: it was born on 30 January 1817, after the inhabitants between the Chisola, the Po and the Oitana had asked in April 1816 to be detached from Carignano and Moncalieri. Beyond the Po part of its territory lies in the Lanca di Santa Marta reserve, a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2016.
