Vinovo

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 14,108 · Postal code: 10048

In 1775 part of the Della Rovere castle was turned into a factory for majolica and porcelain, and under the direction of Vittorio Amedeo Gioanetti the porcelain of Vinovo made a name for itself. The castle has returned to the town council and since 2006 has housed the public library.

The town has 14,108 residents and appears in documents as early as 1040, under the name Vicus Novus, the new village. It became a comune in 1458, when duke Ludovico of Savoy granted it its statutes; until 1865 it also included Stupinigi, later passed to Nichelino.

Fun facts about Vinovo

The patron is Saint Bartholomew and the feast falls on 24 August. His church was born in 1451 as an enlargement of the Della Rovere private chapel and took the place of San Desiderio, who had been the village's first patron and whose church, standing alone in open country, was left to guard the image of the Madonna of Sorrows.

San Bartolomeo came close to disappearing: on 4 August 1630, during the war of Monferrato, French troops set fire to it, and it was rebuilt once the fighting was over. Another thing that has lasted a long time in Vinovo is the Giuseppe Verdi Philharmonic, the town band founded in 1847 and active ever since without a break.
