Pragelato

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 724 · Postal code: 10060

The name is a weather forecast: Pragelato is the frozen meadow, Pradzalà in Occitan. It counts about twenty hamlets in the upper Val Chisone, nearly all on the left bank of the stream. Until 1713 they belonged to the Escartons republic, self-governing under French rule, then passed to Savoy; in 1934 Sestriere broke away as its own comune.

Grand Puy, the Great Knoll, is one of them: a few houses around a church with a clock on its tower. In January 1924 fire burned the homes of nearly all its two hundred people; government, Church and valley folk rebuilt it entirely in seven months, and a plaque on the facade recalls it.
