Sauze di Cesana

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 219 · Postal code: 10054

Sauze di Cesana, Lo Grand Sause in Occitan, ceased for a time to be a comune: in 1928 it was merged into Cesana Torinese, six years later it passed to the new comune of Sestriere, and regained its autonomy only in 1947, at the end of fascism. On 14 July 1962 a fire devastated the village. Its arms show an uprooted willow on silver.

The whole Valle Argentera lies in its territory. There, on 10 September 1944, an American B-17 nicknamed Miss Charlotte crashed into the Gran Mioul. Its squadron flew alone, at night and low, dropping weapons, medicine and food to partisans; that time it was bound for the Valle Pesio. All nine crewmen died. The parish church is dedicated to San Restituto.
