Cinzano

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 375 · Postal code: 10090

Cinzano, Cinsan in Piedmontese, sits on its hill east of Turin. In the tenth century Otto I granted the village in fief to the archbishops of Turin, and Frederick I confirmed it in 1159. A fifteenth-century map shows the church next to the ricetto, the fortified enclosure.

The Della Chiesa marquises bought up its houses to pull them down and lay gardens around the castle, by then a summer residence. Ludovico Della Chiesa, who had inherited the title but not the castle, bought it back and gave it battlements copied from the oldest tower. After the war it was a restaurant, then a medical-educational institute, and in 1968 was divided into flats.
