Moncucco Torinese

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 878 · Postal code: 14024

The name is the mount of Jupiter: thirteenth-century documents call the pieve of San Giorgio di Vergnano, the church the medieval village grew around, Montis Jovis, and before that the Romans probably had a temple to Jupiter here. Moncucco appears as Montecuch in the diploma with which Frederick Barbarossa confirmed the holdings of William of Monferrato, issued at Belforte in 1164.

The lords had arranged with Chieri for their castle to be defended; Chieri's own troops ended up taking it and held it more than a century. In 1863 the inhabitants added Torinese to the name, to say which way they looked; in 1935 the comune entered the new province of Asti.
