Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Sciolze, a municipality of 1,513 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Turin, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
In Piedmont people used to say “Va a Siosse!”, go to Sciolze, to send somebody to hell. The phrase, now out of use, is probably explained by the death sentences once carried out at the castle; another guess points to the distance from Turin and the steep, difficult roads.
The castle, named after San Severino, still sits on top of the hill above the houses: a long block of bare brick, the tower rising among the trees and a great wall holding up the terrace. The church held to be the oldest in Sciolze is Santa Lucia del Fagnour.
